All 154 members of the Penang Voluntary Patrol Team, or Pasukan Peronda Sukarela (PPS), who were detained earlier today, have been released by the police.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mior Faridalatrash Wahid confirmed to The Rakyat Post today that the members, who were hauled up by police as soon as they finished their march-past for the Penang Merdeka celebrations at Penang Esplanade, have been released on police bail.
The members, wearing their trademark purple vests, had been brought to the Lebuh Pantai police station earlier before being taken to the Northeast district police headquarters for further action.
It is learned that the PPS members, however, had their uniforms confiscated upon their release.
Earlier, Mior said they were being investigated under the Societies Act 1966, after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) declared the unit as unlawful.
Meanwhile, on his Twitter account, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar urged those responsible for PPS to turn themselves in before the police go to their homes.
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had said that all state events that would need the surveillance and assistance of the PPS, which is governed by the Penang government, would be called off today pending police investigations.
He said this was the way of the 10,000 odd PPS members in Penang to show support and solidarity for their 154 comrades.
Yesterday, Lim was reported as saying that the PPS should not be afraid of police action and the state would provide all the necessary assistance, including legal help, to them should they be arrested.
He said PPS should continue with its services with the backing of the state government to ensure that Penang was safe through the state-run body’s commitment in assisting police in patrolling the streets in crime prevention.
