Chow said witnesses saw a man, in his 40s, wearing a cap, who came to the centre at around 3.04am and began burning a piece of cloth at the metal gate in front of the building at about 3.06am.
It is learnt that the cloth was a towel which had been poured with combustible liquids before it was set aflame.
“The CCTV footage from my service centre had recorded the whole process and the incident only lasted 15 minutes,” Chow said when contacted.
“The CCTV recording showed an old man sleeping on a sofa which was placed in front of the unit next to my service centre,” he added.
“But since the fire died out within a few minutes, the old man didn’t do anything,” said the state executive councillor.
Chow noted that this is the third such incident, after Wisma DAP Penang and Komtar assemblyperson Teh Lai Heng’s service centre had been attacked with black paint.
It is learnt that the situation in Wisma DAP is not so serious, as only the corridor was affected.
“Teh had already lodged a police report, and my assistant will do so as well but I don’t think Wisma DAP will lodge any report,” Chow said.
“Anyway, I will instruct all the assemblypersons to be more cautious in case their service centres become the next target,” he added.
Chow said he had reason to believe that these incidents are related to the recent enforcement by Penang Island Municipal Council (MBPP) to seize the illegal signboard put up by Umno in Jalan Macalister.
He urged the perpetrators, whoever they are, to stop the attacks.
“Don’t resort to such ways to let off steam or unhappiness. We want to see a more mature party and politicians,” Chow said.
“Applying for a permit from MBPP is not a difficult procedure, the council is also quite flexible. Why don’t they abide with the rules and regulations? No party has immunity,” he added.
